Mike and Sereena: A Bedford Springs Wedding

Once upon a day in 2008, mutual friends introduced Mike and Sereena to each other.  They began spending time together however it wasn’t clear whether they were dating or not.  A short while later while in Africa on a missions trip, Mike sent flowers to Sereena back in DC and waited with bated breath for them to arrive.  Sereena was so impressed with Mike the romantic and secretly hoped this meant they were dating.  But to make sure, she took him on a romantic walk to the National Cathedral and it was there that she expressed her desire for them to be a couple.  17 months later, Mike pulled out all the stops for what is still one of the most romantic proposal stories I have ever heard.  ( You can read more about Mike’s Proposal surprise here. ) … and the rest, as they say, is history for these two soulmates, creative spirits and scholars.

The couple chose the historic and picturesque Bedford Springs Resort in central Pennsylvania for their marriage celebration.  “The legend began over 200 years ago at Bedford Springs, where eight mineral springs became famed as a mecca of rejuvenation.”  Today, the resort still boasts the same historic charm, elegance and style and was a most beautiful backdrop for Mike and Sereena’s wedding.

To borrow an excerpt from one of the ceremony readings:
“To marry is the biggest risk in human relations that a person can take. If we commit ourselves to one person for life this is not, as many people think, a rejection of freedom; rather it demands the courage to move into all the risks of freedom, and the risk of love which is permanent; into that love which is not possession, but participation. It takes a lifetime to learn another person. When love is not possession, but participation, then it is part of that co-creation which is our human calling.”

Mike and Sereena’s wedding was infused with such uniqueness and intentionality in the form of DIY flair, a nod to vintage charm, odes to the poetic and academic, and a sensitive spiritual significance.  From handmade “buttoneers” and button bouquets, to hand crocheted love-birds…from “Advice for the Bride and Groom” madlibs to awesome L-O-V-E earrings and cufflinks…from a gorgeous golden hued Maggie Sottero gown to a classic pinstriped suit…from historic patterned wall papers to classic staircases…every detail contributed to the story of Mike and Sereena’s wedding day.
